Design Center
To further differentiate Eastwood from other regional
shopping experiences, specialized programming,
or branding, of the northern part could focus
on a “design center” concept that
would include an array of retail and commercial
uses relating to home and office improvement,
accessories, renovation, and design. A key attraction
might be a Herman Miller showroom that brings
the highly stylized products of the Holland-based
design/build factory to a mid-Michigan location
where it can be showcased to all of the State’s
major population centers, particularly metropolitan
Detroit. The design center could also showcase
several of the other furniture manufacturers that
make up the westcentral Michigan furniture cluster
including Steelcase Corporation and a myriad of
smaller manufacturers grouped near Grand Rapids.
The retail focus of the area could be balanced
by office/studio space for interior designers
and architects.
The companion market study
noted that the Lansing market is generally underserved
by upper-market furniture and home accessories
retailers, and that several could be supported
in a single location.
